When I was first elected to City Council in 2007, then Councilman Steve Jackson took me aside and said “Greg, now that you are on council, I want you to know that there are no Republicans and there are no Democrats here. We are all here to work in the best interest of the city.” That made a lasting impression on me and that is the way I plan to run my administration.
I believe that I must be a mayor for all people, regardless of whether they are Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Green Party members or independents.
I do not feel that I know it all, nor do I believe that I have to be the smartest person in the room. Instead, I believe strongly in consultation and in communication. I also believe that the city is full of talented people whose skills should not be wasted. Simply put, I need and want your ideas, your suggestions and your input.
As your mayor, I will ensure that all people are listened to regardless of their party affiliation or position in the community. My appointments to city boards and commissions will first be based on an individual’s qualifications to serve on that board rather than on their party affiliation or personal friendships. And, I will not rely solely on the same old hands who have occupied those positions under the current and former Republican administrations. I will seek to bring new ideas to the table by leveraging my community involvement to identify new people who both want to serve and have the experience and qualifications to serve.
When good ideas come forward, I will encourage members of my administration to act on those that fall within their areas of responsibility. I will also encourage City Council to give a timely up or down vote on ideas that require new legislation and I pledge that it will no longer take months to act on legislation, even if I personally oppose it.
I will also strive to be approachable to all members of the community, not just the rich and powerful. I will do so by attending block watch meetings; by my continued involvement in community organizations; and, by creating a culture whereby I and members of my administration return citizen’s phone calls and otherwise treat them with respect. I will also add the “Mayor’s Corner” to the City’s website. The Mayor’s Corner will provide updates on the political, economic and social events affecting Lancaster.
Soliciting ideas from all people, is an essential part of my vision for moving Lancaster forward. To read the rest of my vision click here.
